Functional Taping is a special technique that utilizes an elastic form of therapy tape known as kinesiology tape. This tape differs from the classic rigid athletic tape by not restricting range of motion to protect the affected muscles/joints. Instead, the elastic properties of the kinesiology tape help facilitate local muscles and nerves to improve stability and reduce pain. The tape can be utilized during an acute injury to reduce swelling, improve circulation and jump-start the healing process. In chronic pain/dysfunctions, the tape will stimulate the neurological system to help correct body mechanics. The swelling that occurs with an injury will cause the local muscles to "de-activate" to protect the injured area. This occurs in conditions like low back pain and without the stimilation of the local low back muscles, there is a risk of further injury.
